What interior painting costs in Massachusetts in 2026

Interior painting is priced by room more often than by square foot, because the variables that matter — trim, ceiling height, wall condition — do not scale with floor area.
Room by room
| Room | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Bathroom | $200 – $670 |
| Closet | $100 – $315 |
| Bedroom | $650 – $1,200 |
| Dining room | $600 – $1,200 |
| Kitchen (walls only) | $850 – $1,500 |
| Living or family room | $1,200 – $1,700 |
| Hall or stairwell | $450 – $900 |
| Whole home, ~2,000 sq ft | $5,000 – $10,000 |

Per square foot
$2.00 – $6.00 per square foot of floor area for walls, is the range four independent sources agree on for Massachusetts. Adding ceilings and full trim moves you toward and past the top of that band.
One number worth internalising: labour is 75–85% of the cost of a paint job (JM All-Pro, Quality Preferred, SL Painting). When a contractor says they will “use a cheaper paint to save you money,” they are offering to reduce 15–25% of the cost by choosing the component that determines how long the other 80% lasts.
Trim, doors and ceilings
| Element | Typical rate |
|---|---|
| Baseboard, casing, crown | $1 – $4 per linear foot |
| Interior door (each) | $40 – $150 |
| Ceilings added to a room | roughly +18% |
| Ceilings above 9 ft | +20 – 30% |

What actually changes your quote
- Wall condition. Skim-coating old plaster, filling nail pops, repairing cracks and removing wallpaper adhesive are all hours before a drop of finish paint is opened. This is the single largest variable in older MetroWest homes.
- Trim volume. A 1920s Wellesley colonial with picture rail, deep baseboard and six-panel doors is not the same room as a 2004 bedroom with a 3-inch base.
- Color change. Dark to light needs a primer coat plus two finish coats. Same-color refresh can sometimes be done in one.
- Lead paint. Pre-1978 homes where more than 6 square feet of paint per interior room is disturbed trigger lead-safe requirements — budget 15–30% more. Details →
- Occupied vs empty. Painting around a family living there means daily set-up and take-down. It is worth it, and it is not free.
Paint costs, so you can read a quote
| Product | Approx. per gallon | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Benjamin Moore ben | $45 – $48 | Budget-conscious interiors |
| Benjamin Moore Regal Select | $64 – $73 | The workhorse for most interiors |
| Benjamin Moore Aura | $80 – $94 | Deep colors, high-wear areas |
| Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint | $43 – $70 | Good general-purpose |
| Sherwin-Williams Duration | $62 – $88 | Higher build, better washability |
| Sherwin-Williams Emerald | $73 – $104 | Premium, low-VOC options |
Ranges span contractor-net to list pricing. Prudent Reviews, PaintStrategies, UseCalcPro. A typical room takes 2–3 gallons for two coats.
The useful takeaway: the difference between a mid-tier and a premium product across a whole 2,000 sq ft house is a few hundred dollars. It is almost never the right place to economise.
