Massachusetts HIC registration

Why the registration matters more than it sounds: hiring a registered contractor gives you access to the Massachusetts Guaranty Fund, which may reimburse a homeowner up to $25,000 on an uncollectable judgment. Hire an unregistered one and that route does not exist for you at all. (Mass.gov)

Insurance

We carry general liability and workers compensation. Certificates are issued directly by our agent — not forwarded as a PDF by us — and we will name you as additional insured on request at no cost.

Ask every bidder for both. Workers compensation is expensive in Massachusetts and it is the one some contractors skip; if an uninsured painter is injured on your property, that exposure can land on your homeowner’s policy.

What Massachusetts requires in your contract

For work over $1,000, the written contract must contain the contractor’s name, address and HIC registration number; a full description of the work; start and substantial completion dates; the total price and payment schedule; a three-day rescission notice for off-site signings; and notice of the arbitration option. The deposit may not exceed one third of the contract price or the actual cost of special-order materials, whichever is greater.
